Thropy is an amateur debating tournament held in Palmerston North.  You’re not eligible to debate at Thropy if you’ve debated at Thropy and one or more of Joynt Scroll, Easters/Officer's Cup, Australs or Worlds (or two of Joynt Scroll, Easters, Australs or Worlds). If you’ve only debated at Thropy and NZBP, no matter how many times you have done so, you are still eligible to debate at this Thropy.

The Society won thropy in 2023, 2022, 2020 & 2019!

Thropy is going to be epic.  If you’re a beginner debater, it’s the perfect way to improve your skills; if you’re in debating for the social side of things, it’s a weekend full of drinking and meeting new people.

Joynt Scroll is the most prestigious of the national debating tournaments, having been contested since its inception in 1902. It consists of two teams of three speaking for 8 minutes in a format similar to Australs, but with POIs. It is well known as a tournament with complex and interesting debates.

The Society has won the Joynt Scroll in 1910, 1920, 1930, 1936, 1956, 1957, 1973,  1974, 1975, 1989, 1995, 2005, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2020, 2021, and 2023.

The tournament was established in 2004 by the Victoria University of Wellington Debating Society, with the aim of further exposing New Zealand debaters and adjudicators to the British Parliamentary style used at the World Championship.

Held at the end of the second semester, the tournament provides valuable practice for New Zealand teams attending Worlds.

The British Parliamentary style of debating involves four teams; opening and closing teams for government and opposition sides. BP is open to any speakers, even those no longer at university, and traditionally attracts the very best that New Zealand (and on occasion international campuses) has to offer.

Give it a go! If you’re keen, email us at exec@debating.co.nz with your partner’s name; if you can’t find a partner we’re happy to help out.
