Thropy is an amateur debating tournament held in Hamilton.  You’re not eligible to debate at Thropy if you’ve debated at Thropy and one or more of Joynt Scroll, Easters/Officer's Cup, Australs or Worlds (or two of Joynt Scroll, Easters, Australs or Worlds). If you’ve only debated at Thropy and NZBP, no matter how many times you have done so, you are still eligible to debate at this Thropy.

Thropy is going to be epic.  If you’re a beginner debater, it’s the perfect way to improve your skills; if you’re in debating for the social side of things, it’s a weekend full of drinking and meeting new people.

Keep an eye on your emails and on our Facebook page to be a part of a team!

Previously known as Easters, this tournament pits teams of two speakers against one another with only five minutes to prepare. Not surprisingly it has become known as a fast-paced and exciting start to the year.

Team numbers are capped at six, so trials are held to determine what speakers will go as part of the Auckland contingent.

The Society won the tournament in 2016 and an Auckland team were finalists in 2017.

Joynt Scroll has recently changed in format and for the first time this year will no longer be a full prepared tournament, instead changing to a debate style similar to World School's.

It is the most prestigious of the national debating tournaments, having been contested since its inception in 1902.

The Society has won the Joynt Scroll in 1910, 1920, 1930, 1936, 1956, 1957, 1973,  1974, 1975, 1989, 1995, 2005, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Speech Length: 7 minutes
Speakers: 2 per team

The tournament was established in 2004 by the Victoria University of Wellington Debating Society, with the aim of further exposing New Zealand debaters and adjudicators to the British Parliamentary style used at the World Championship.

Held at the end of the second semester, the tournament provides valuable practice for New Zealand teams attending Worlds.

The British Parliamentary style of debating involves four teams; opening and closing teams for government and opposition sides. BP is open to any speakers, even those no longer at university, and traditionally attracts the very best that New Zealand (and on occasion international campuses) has to offer.

Give it a go! If you’re keen, email us at with your partner’s name; if you can’t find a partner we’re happy to help out.
