Debating: it's what we do.

Hi all,

After 8 competitive rounds we are happy to announce the results and break for the AUBPO contest in 2009.

1. Before we get to those results however, please take note of the special arrangements for this Thursday:

  • There will be a semi-final held at 6pm this Thursday (instead of a regular ‘Pro Debate’);
  • There will be a Grand Final straight afterward (when the second round normally occurs);
  • General debates will be at the special time of 6pm (so in the first time slot) so people can watch the final if they wish to;
  • If you want to participate in a general debate you must therefore arrive at the special time of 610pm;
  • People are welcome (and encouraged) to watch the semis and finals!

2. Top Eight Teams (in order):

Below are the top breaking teams in order of results. Teams were ranked first by their ‘win points’ and then where necessary by their speaker scores. Where teams had debated more than 5 times, their top 5 results were counted.

These people are happy because they can't wait to be at the AUBPO final!

1. Brad/Nupur (not eligible to break)

2. Gretta/Sam

3. Benedict/Mark

4. David/Jesse

5. Hank/Alex

6. Charlotte/Chuan-Zheng

7. Ashton/Verity

8. Aritra/Andrew

9. Kate/Kirsty

These 8 teams (including Kate and Kirsty because my team will not be continuing) will be text over the next few days to confirm their availability for the finals. Congratulations to those teams and to everyone else who competed!

3. Top Ten Speakers (in order)

Below are the top ten speakers in order. Note that speakers were ranked if they had debated at least three times. Scores were taken individually, so people who did not have consisted teams were not disadvantaged.

4. Special Thanks:

Many of you will have debated against me during the preliminary rounds. It’s been good to have an opportunity to debate alongside you all rather than simply judge you each week. Because the tournament is about you however, my team will not be progressing in the tournament. On that basis, I would like to pay special thanks to my partner in crime, Nupur Upadhyay, who misses out on an opportunity to compete in the finals as a result. Nupur has been a strong debater and her individual speaker ranking reflects that; I’m sure on any other team she would have otherwise been in the final so my thanks and congratulations go to her.

Thanks also to everyone who has competed, debated and adjudicated throughout the semester. It’s been a great tournament and I hope you have all enjoyed it.

5. Weekly ‘Best Speaker’ awards:

You will recall that each week we have been awarding the best speaker in a randomly drawn room a prize. That prize has been a free ticket to our end of year dinner (see below). Not all weekly winners have been announced on the night, so check below for your name. Winners are:

clubs-ball-14

This is me congratulating the AUBPO winners.

  • Round 1: Tracey Hu
  • Round 2: Charlotte Forster
  • Round 3: Chantelle Butler
  • Round 4: TBC (see below)
  • Round 5: TBC (see below)
  • Round 6: TBC (see below)
  • Round 7: Rupert Nelson
  • Round 8: Jesse Hart

Apologies that I do not have the winners recorded for Rounds 4,5 and 6. I don’t have the results with me and would prefer to get this email out to you all as soon as possible. If anyone can help fill me if they remember receiving a prize that would be appreciated, otherwise I will be in touch with the other 3 recipients when I track down the mark sheets!

Meet Akif this week at Debsoc

Hi all,

1. AUBPO Continues this Thursday 15 October
Rather than hold the AUBPO break rounds this week we have decided to hold those next week and hold another general AUBPO round to let teams have one last hit at reaching five debates. That means all teams can enter/attend as usual and we will have be having casual debates for people not in teams as well. We will be in Stone this week. A Pro Debate will start at 6pm so arrive anytime before 6:45pm to register for the general rounds. The topic for that round will be released at 7:15pm.

This is instead of a catch up round tomorrow.

2. So the AUBPO Final is Next Thursday 22 October
The break to the final debate in the AUBPO Competition will be announced this Friday and a final will take place next Thursday. More details will follow on Friday

3. End of Year Dinner Next Friday 23 October
The End of Year Dinner and Prize-giving is shaping up for next Friday 23 October. We have something pretty cool in mind and will announce the location and pricing details tomorrow or Thursday. In the meantime, just keep that night free for some Debsoc fun!

4. NZBP This Novemeber
The NZ BP Champs take place next month on 21/22 November in Wellington. The competition is open entry – so ANYONE can attend. Better yet, you get to select your own team! Auckland Debsoc always sends a large contingent along and we expect at least 25-30 of us will make it down this time too. More details can be found here. It’s going to be an excellent way to finish the year, so we encourage everyone to think about attending!

If you didn’t email in last week, do email in and let us know if you wish to attend!

That’s all,

Brad

Come to Debsoc this week!

Hi all,

1. Debating This Thursday
Debsoc this Thursday will be in Stone Lecture Theatre. A regular Pro Debate will start at 6pm. General Debates for all members (or AUBPO Round #7 for those participating) will have their topic announced at 7:15pm. As always, please arrive and sign up before 6:45pm if you wish to debate!

2. Law/Staff Student Debate
Is tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6pm in Stone. More details here.

3. AUBPO Results to Date:
Could all teams please check the team results up to the end of Round 6 on this page and make sure their results are accurate. A score of 0,1,2 or 3 means your team did debate together that week and that is your mark. If you have an N/A it means you and your partner did not debate together! Please check we have got the correct scores for debates and that we haven’t recorded you as N/A if you did debate that week. I have all the marksheets still so it will be easier to check!

4. AUBPO Catch Up Debates
This week is the final Thursday round for AUBPO (Round #7)! From here we will move to a series of final debates. To be considered for these rounds you must have attended five debates with your partner. We will be having limited Catch Up debates for any team who is just short next Wednesday night (14 October). If your team wants to have a catch up debate please email us by the end of this week! If you want to catch up but can’t make that night, please also email. If there is enough demand we will have a second catch up night!

5. Prizes
We are still allocating a random prize every Thursday to the best speaker in each room. There will also be super good prizes for the overall winners, so do keep coming along. Sadly my laptop is in for repair at the moment, but a full list of current prizewinners will be in our next mailout!

6. NZ National BP Champs

If you wish to attend BP, please email us back with the name of your partner and we’ll handle registration for you and send you more details as we get it.

Thats all for now,

Brad

teamsters

Come to debating and look as happy as these three.

Hey all,

1. Debating and AUBPO Round #6 This Thursday

Come along to Algie Lecture Theatre in the Law School this Thursday for regular debating. We have show debate (see point 2) that will start at 6pm for those who wish to watch it. Regular debaters (and those in the ongoing BP tournament) must arrive and signup before 645pm to be included in the general round. If you are on a team, it is okay if only ONE of your team members comes along and signs up for both of you! The topic will be announced at roughly 7:15pm!

2. Immigration Show Debate

Also in place of the regular Pro Debate this week we will be holding a show debate on the moot This house supports open immigration. The debate will highlight the diversity within the Society and showcase some of our talented speakers who sometimes sneak below the radar! Click here for more

3. Executive for 2010 Elected!

At an epic AGM last week we elected an Executive for 2010. Congratulations go to Max Harris (2010 President) and his team! The full details were emailed out over the weekend, but if you missed it check here.

4, Women’s Tournament Success

We had two teams in Australia this weekend for the Australasian Women’s Debaitng Champs who have done the Society very proud. The latest update is that Gretta and Steph broke to the Semi-Finals in 4th place (out of 8 breaking team because the tournament is BP style)! This is an incredible result and we will have a full update from the teams when they return!

DRAMA! Engineering this week!

Kanye

Kanye interrupts Taylor's love story. How could he be so heartless?

Hi All,

NOTE WE ARE MEETING IN ENGINEERING THIS WEEK

1. AUPBO Round #5
This week we will be returning to AUBPO rounds so grab your team mate and cruise along to Eng3401 (the one at the rear right corner of the main engineering floor) at 6pm. Signups to debate will close at 6.45pm and the round should start by around 7.30pm as normal.

2. AGM Next Week
Don’t forget that next Thursday (the 24th) is the Debsoc’s AGM. This is where the executive reports for the year will be presented, Constitutional amendments can be proposed and (arguably most importantly) the Executive for next year will be elected. So if you want to have a stake in how the society is run next year, or have views on how it’s been run this year, be sure to be there in Algie at 6pm.

3. How to run/vote at the AGM
At the AGM there are two types of votes you may wish to cast. The first are votes on ordinary motions. Motions could be on almost anything (a change to the Constitution, electing a life member, accepting the minutes of last year’s meeting). Motions can be proposed in person, without notice, by any member on the night. The second type of vote is for electing the Society Executive for 2010.

pwaz

Patrick Swayze. We will remember.

To vote at the AGM the Constitution requires you to have paid the $5 Society membership fee and to have attended three Society events. For that purpose, events include:

  • Any Thursday club night;
  • Any tournament (internal or external);
  • The opening night function;

Other events, including the AGM itself, do not count. Where there is doubt as to eligibility it will be confirmed by the current Society Executive.

In order to run for election for any of the Executive positions, you simply need to attend on the night and have two other members nominate you. This can be done on the night and does not need to be organized in advance.

Any questions let us know.

4. Other things
Also, next Wednesday (the23rd) UNYANZ (the UN Youth Association of NZ) is holding an International Relations themed pub quiz at Forde’s Front Bench. It promises to be a good night and it would be great to see lots of debaters there!
