This semester (semester 2, 2010) the Society isrunning an ongoing British Parliamentary style tournament for all members to participate in.

We’re calling it the Auckland University British Parliamentary Open (or the AUBPO).

Details of the tournament are as follows:

  • Debating rounds are held every Thursday – you need to be there by 6.15pm to register.  Beforehand (at 5.15) you can either go to a coaching session or watch some our best debaters in a pro debate – this will all be over by 6.30 in time for you to debate.
  • There will be seven rounds of debates over the semester and we will then ‘break’ to a finals series with semi final and grand final debates
  • You only need to attend any five of the seven rounds to be eligible to ‘break’ into the finals series and to win major prizes;
  • If you wish to attend more than five rounds you can and we will take your best five results when we calculate the break;
  • The style of debates will be British Parliamentary, so there will only be two people in each team;
  • You can choose your own team. If you don’t have a team, we will pair you up with someone;
  • We will still be having ‘casual debates’ on those nights, so if you can’t commit to a team, or if your partner is sick you can still attend and will be able to debate;
  • We will be recording the wins per team as well as well as wins per individual and scores per individual. So even if your partner is sick, you may still accumulate ‘points’ as an individual and be eligible for individual awards;
  • Results will be recorded via our website
  • The winners of the tournament as well as the Best Speaker will receive a free ticket to our End of Year Dinner

The tournament will be a lot of fun, and we’ll be heading out for drinks after each round, as ever. If you’re keen to debate in the tournament, show up  – it doesn’t matter if you don’t have a partner (we can find you one) or if you weren’t there for the first couple of rounds.
