The “McLeod Thropy” is a competition targeted at novice speakers in the North Island. As such, it is only open to those speakers who have attended no more than one national tournament. National tournaments for this puprose include: Easters, Joynt Scroll and the Victoria BP Open.

In 2009 Thropy was held in Palmerston North at the Massey campus, and in 2010 it was held in Hamilton.  Thropy is open entry, meaning any speaker who is eligible can compete, although trials are often held for the purpose of assigning teams of similar abilities.

Due to the large contingents sent by the Auckland and Victoria Debating Societies, and the uniting factor of a lack of experience on the national debating circuit, Thropy is well known as a social tournament.

The Executive would strongly encourage all new members to come along to Thropy to get an idea of what university debating tournaments are like.
